For the endangered tiger, genetics may finish what the Raj started
"The skin and bones of long-dead tigers from the days of the British Raj have helped reveal how the latest threat to the endangered species is their own DNA. Taking DNA samples from game hunters' trophies in the Natural History Museum and National Museum of Scotland’s collections, researchers compared these with samples from modern tigers. They found that genetic diversity among the remaining Indian tigers may be low enough to make the population unviable."

Palamu Tiger Reserve tigers go traceless as prey population dwindles
"The Palamu Tiger Reserve (PTR) is witnessing a fast decline in the population of tigers because the reserve lacks animals tigers can prey on. In the last 10 years, 36 tigers have gone traceless from the reserve and forest guards posted there attribute this to the lack of rarely found spotted deer, blue-bulls, deer and other animals, tigers like to feast upon."

SF Zoo's New Tiger Cub Named After Literary Agent
"To be memorialized with a tiger cub, all you need is a little bit of chutzpah and to be in the right place at the right time. With $47,000 to burn. That's the lesson of Jillian, the San Francisco Zoo's new Sumatran tiger cub. Jillian bears the name of Jillian Manus, a literary agent who shelled out $47,000 for the right to name the cub at a charity event, according to the San Francisco Appeal online newspaper."
